USD sports club enables young wheelchair users to enjoy sport and social activities.
We usually meet at One Leisure St Neots in Cambridgeshire for monthly sports taster sessions. Though this is the core of our club, regular members also enjoy additional trips and activities throughout the year.
All of our members are wheelchair users. Some use manual chairs, some power chairs. Some are active independent youngsters, others need more support due to additional needs. All are welcome and we aim to adapt activities to include everyone.
We ask that a parent/carer stays to support their young person during the session unless they are able to take part completely independently. In any case an adult must remain on site at all times. Lasting friendships have developed amongst families as well as between the members, the club being almost as important for the mutual support as it is for the experiences it offers.
During additional activities and trips we are often able to include siblings though the monthly sports sessions are for members only.
The club is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom are parents of members.
Some sessions are delivered by our volunteers, others by visiting coaches for specific sports.
Membership of the club is currently £30 annually which includes the monthly sessions plus a club polo shirt the first year. We make an additional small charge for extra activities such as boat trips and ski-ing but subsidise these where funds allow.
If you are interested in becoming a member please make contact. You are very welcome to come and try a session to see if you'd like to join. We are able to accept new members up to the age of 18, though some of our established members stay on after this if the club can still meet their needs.
We'd also like to hear form anyone interested in volunteering once per month for 2 hours to help during our sports session or anyone interested in supporting us through fundraising. All volunteers are subject to usual checks including enhanced DBS.
